Photo opp - Bravery certificate presented to girl who saved mum’s life

An 11-year-old girl who came to the rescue of her mum after she suffered a diabetic hypo has been awarded with a bravery certificate.

Brooke Mackey was alone with her mum Claire Fox at their home in Ashington on 31 August when she was unable to wake her.

A diabetic for more than 20 years, Claire had fallen unconscious from a diabetic hypo, which could potentially have killed her.

Brooke immediately dialled 999 and attempted to put her mum into a recovery position until help arrived.

She has now been rewarded for her bravery by North East Ambulance Service.

Paramedic Ian Delf and Ambulance Care Assistant Wendy Lillico, who took care of Claire that day, will be presenting the certificate to Brooke on the service’s behalf after being impressed by her maturity.

Ian said: “Most people, when they are going into a hypo, start to feel unwell but Claire is one of those unfortunate diabetics who don’t get any warning, it can just come on and hit her like a steam train. These are much more dangerous and undoubtedly can be fatal.

“In Brooke’s attempts to save her mam, she had tried to move her into the recovery position and had taken her  blood sugar which she had already given to the call taker and was able to give us when we arrived.

“She was so calm when we got there, we thought she was just fantastic!”

Claire said: “Brooke is inspirational really with the way she dealt with the situation. It’s really nice that Ian and Wendy want to recognise her in this way.”
