Blue light partnership stronger than ever

Ambulance, fire and police colleagues have moved into a newly operational carbon-neutral community tri-station in Hebburn.

We have been working with Tyne and Wear Fire Rescue Service and Northumbria Police on the tri-station project for several years to develop the new state-of-the-art site, which is set to be the first of its kind in the UK to be completely carbon neutral.

Around 40 members of NEAS staff, three ambulance vehicles and one clinical team leader car are now based there.

Developed by Esh Construction, the building has been designed with a focus on sustainability, collaboration and the community. The site includes ground source heat pumps, electric vehicle charging (EV) points, a wildflower meadow to support local biodiversity and ‘E’ cycle storage and charging facilities.

The tri-station is one of three partnership projects with Tyne and Wear Fire Service, having also worked together on two co-location stations in Wallsend and Sunderland. The new stations come following investment which allowed us to recruit additional ambulance crews and purchase additional ambulances.

Tarryn Lake, director of finance and digital at NEAS, said: “Our ambition is to deliver outstanding performance and safe, compassionate and inclusive care. To do that, we have to ensure we have the right people and equip them with the right tools to do their roles.

“It’s fantastic to see new stations being added across our region, with additional ambulance crews now able to respond to the population we serve. The tri-station, in particular, is a fantastic asset to the local community.

“Having shared facilities also provide us with opportunities to work closely with our colleagues and build relationships as a collaborative emergency service.”
