NEAS education team leads a year of workforce transformation

NEAS has marked a milestone year in workforce development, driven by the ambitious and inclusive work of its education team. Their focus on high‑quality training, innovative career pathways and equitable learning has strengthened skills across the organisation and supported the delivery of more personalised care to patients across the North East.

Major investment delivers real impact

Over the past 12 months, NEAS has delivered one of its most wide‑reaching programmes of learning and development to date. Thousands of colleagues - from new starters to experienced clinicians - have benefited from enhanced statutory training, specialist clinical programmes and tailored professional development.

This investment culminated in a service‑wide celebration recognising achievements across multiple apprenticeships and career pathways, reinforcing a growing culture of pride, capability and ambition within the workforce.

A key development this year has been the creation of education designed to support and equip staff with the skills and confidence to deliver more care in the community. These plans include enhanced clinical decision‑making, community‑based assessment skills, and greater focus on alternative care pathways - helping to reduce unnecessary hospital conveyance and strengthen care closer to home.

Nationally recognised inclusive education

A major highlight of the year was NEAS achieving diamond standard accreditation for its work in learning disability and autism training. More than 90% of the workforce has now completed this programme, which was co‑produced with people with lived experience.

The training is already reshaping how ambulance staff communicate with and support autistic people and those with learning disabilities. Colleagues report greater confidence and improved understanding, while service users have said they feel more respected, listened to and valued. This work is helping reduce long‑standing health inequalities and setting a new benchmark for inclusion across the ambulance sector.

Expanding clinical careers through apprenticeships

The organisation’s paramedic apprenticeship programme continues to play a pivotal role in building NEAS’s future clinical workforce. With 61 apprentices currently in training, the programme offers a fully funded and flexible route into the profession—supporting colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds to progress their careers.

Apprentices benefit from a blend of immersive simulation, academic teaching, hands‑on clinical experience and dedicated pastoral support. Many recent graduates began their NEAS journey in non‑clinical roles and are now delivering frontline care across the region.

The programme is strengthening the organisation in three key ways:

  • boosting long‑term career progression,
  • improving retention of home‑grown talent, and
  • ensuring patients receive care from skilled professionals rooted in the communities they serve.

Looking ahead

As NEAS continues its wider organisational transformation, the work of the education team remains central to future success. Their evolving training plans will play a crucial role in enabling staff to work differently - supporting a shift towards greater community‑based care and improved patient experiences outside hospital settings.

Through a continued focus on high‑quality training, compassionate practice and inclusive opportunities, the team is strengthening the organisation’s capability, professionalism and resilience.

By empowering colleagues and raising standards across the service, the NEAS education team is not only investing in NEAS’s workforce today—it is shaping the quality of care that patients will receive for years to come.
